About the Neighborhood

NDK — short for National Palace of Culture (Natsionalen Dvorets na Kulturata) — is both a landmark and one of the most central, sought-after neighbourhoods in Sofia, built around the huge congress/cultural centre of the same name.

• Located at the southern end of Vitosha Boulevard, Sofia’s main pedestrian shopping street, right in the city centre.
• The building itself is a monumental Soviet-era brutalist landmark — a hexagonal mass of concrete and glass built in 1981 to mark Bulgaria’s 1,300th anniversary, with 12 halls used for concerts, theatre, and festivals.
• In front of it is a large square with fountains and a park, and the NDK metro station is considered one of the more stylish stops on the line, with shops and food stalls.
• The surrounding park is popular with skateboarders and evening crowds, and there’s a piece of the Berlin Wall tucked away in it
